Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know
-
Is Furry Family Pet Photography right for me?If you and your pets enjoy being outdoors in natural settings and relaxed, relatively uncontrolled environments, we’re likely a good match. If you prefer posed photos in a studio or enjoy dressing your pet in anything more than a collar, you may be better matched with a photographer who shoots in those styles.
-
Why should I choose custom photography? It seems so expensive. There are several reasons to go the custom route and ultimately it’s a personal choice. But think of it this way: Pets are cherished family members and sadly, they are with us for a much shorter time than we would like. Custom photography provides a personalized experience and gives you keepsakes of special moments that will last a lifetime.
-
I’m interested! How do we get started? The first step is to contact me at hello@furry-family.co.uk to ask any questions you might have and schedule a pre-shoot consultation. At the meeting, we will go over the details, chat about your pets, discuss what you hope to get out of the session and review samples, products and pricing.
-
Where are you located? Do you travel?I’m located in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, and travel throughout Bucks, Hertfordshire and Oxfordshire. For sessions more than 20 miles away, mileage is charged.
-
My pet is ill and I don’t know how much time I have left with them, can I still get their picture taken?"YES! By all means please contact me right away as I prioritize these sessions and will adjust my schedule as needed to accommodate your timeline. End-of-life portraits are some of the most poignant and meaningful images I take and are a beautiful way to honour your pet while they are still with you and provide a lifetime memory after they’ve gone.
-
Do you photograph all year round?Yes! Spring, summer, fall and winter each provide beautiful backgrounds.
-
What happens during the session? We meet at the location and give your pet a little time to get used to me and my camera before we begin. After he’s comfortable, we start having fun and I start shooting.
-
Where and when will we go for the shoot?Where: We’ll decide that together. We can do it in your backyard, or I can suggest other options depending on what your pet enjoys most. Consider if you would like photos taken in a village, in the woods, in a field or in beautifully manicured gardens. I charge mileage to attend at a location more than 20 miles from Aylesbury. All cats are photographed in your home or yard. When: Early morning and early evening provide the best light for outdoor photography, but if the day is overcast, or the location is well shaded, then any time of the day will do. In the summer, my favourite time of day is early morning to beat the heat. In the cooler months, late afternoon is a great alternative. Photographs taken mid-day, without shade on bright, sunny days will not return good results.
-
How long is the session? Most sessions are between one and two hours. However, I do not stop shooting until I am satisfied that we have captured everything we have set out to, as discussed during our initial pre-session meeting. Don't worry! You and your pet will be given plenty of opportunities to rest throughout.
-
Does my dog need to be trained?Definitely not. Free spirits and obedience school dropouts are some of the most fun dogs I know. You can keep the leash on, and I edit it out, and we will arrange our session to a place where your dog won't be distracted by others.
-
What if my dog can’t go off-leash?No problem! We can still get amazing images! I’ll remove the leash from the images during the post-processing process. View some examples to see how it works.
-
Can you shoot more than one pet in a session?Yes! I can shoot as many pets as you have. If you have more than one, I recommend that you enlist a friend or family member to help handle your pets during the session.
-
Do you only photograph dogs? No, I love cats too! and guinea pigs, ferrets, parrots, turtles, iguanas etc. If you love them, then I want to make their portrait for you and I love styling portrait sessions for unique pets.
-
What should I bring?Toys, treats, water and whatever lights up your pet when it’s time for fun. I’ll bring a few things as well because new stuff can be extra interesting.
-
What should my pet wear?Preferably nothing at all, but a flat collar is fine.
-
What should I wear?Do you want to be included in the photos? If so, I recommend wearing something somewhat formal. Dark colours tend to be slimming. Light colours can be light and airy. Try to have your outfit comprised of subdued, matching tones. Wear solid colours, not prints or patterns. Avoid short sleeves or short pants. Would you rather stay out of the frame? Wear something comfortable, and something you don't mind getting a little dirty. If the weather has been damp, make sure you're wearing shoes that can get muddy.
-
What happens if it rains? You can relax, we’ll just reschedule your session! I leave openings in my calendar to accommodate rain days, so we'll get you rebooked as soon as possible.
-
How long after the shoot can I see my photos?Because I’ll be handing you the highest quality, professionally captured images you could hope for, it will be about two to three weeks before you can see the results. We’ll schedule a session to view the images together and I’ll help guide you through the decision-making process and show you what your photos will look like on your wall.

What kind of products do you offer? It is my job to help you find the very best ways to display your art. I will personally walk you through the process of planning your images, capturing them, selecting them and finding the very best method to display them. I offer a variety of beautiful options of wall art, albums and prints ordered à la carte. All print orders are filled by a wonderful UK based print lab which produces high-quality work and professional framing. My favourite items are large-scale acrylic prints to give your images some serious WOW factor, or canvas mounted in a sophisticated float frame. For details on some of the products that I offer, please see my artwork page.
-
Do you offer digitals?Once a threshold has been met, purchases of wall art or albums come with the high-resolution digital files. You can purchase the digitals only if you wish.
-
Once I place my order, how long will it take to get my prints and album?"It varies depending on what you order, but in general, four weeks.
-
How much will this cost?As with any other professional service, the total cost will vary depending on what you want. The retainer fee is £100 that you can use as product credit. Most people spend between £500 and £2,000 on their artwork. A complete breakdown of options will be given to you the first time we meet.
-
When and how do I pay?£100 deposit is required to secure a date. £50 from this will be converted to Art Credit. The artwork is decided upon and purchased at the reveal and ordering session. I will provide the final invoice on the day. An order has not been submitted until your invoice has been paid in full. Payment can be provided via electronic fund transfer, cheque, cash or Paypal.
